Hazrat Ali Asghar (رضی اللہ عنہ) – The Youngest Martyr of Karbala

Hazrat Ali Asghar (رضی اللہ عنہ), the youngest son of Imam Hussain (رضی اللہ عنہ), holds a deeply emotional and significant place in Islamic history. He was just six months old when he was martyred during the Battle of Karbala on 10th Muharram, 61 AH (680 CE). His martyrdom is a powerful symbol of innocence, sacrifice, and the cruelty faced by the family of the Prophet (ﷺ) at the hands of the oppressors.

Who Was Hazrat Ali Asghar (رضی اللہ عنہ)?

Hazrat Ali Asghar (رضی اللہ عنہ) was the youngest son of Imam Hussain (رضی اللہ عنہ) and Bibi Rubab (رضی اللہ عنہا). He was born in Medina and was a beloved child of the household of the Prophet (ﷺ). Despite his young age, his name became eternal due to the tragic events of Karbala.

Hazrat Ali Asghar (رضی اللہ عنہ) in the Battle of Karbala

The martyrdom of Hazrat Ali Asghar (رضی اللہ عنہ) is one of the most heartbreaking tragedies of Karbala. As the infant son of Imam Hussain (رضی اللہ عنہ), he endured extreme thirst due to the three-day siege that deprived the family of water.

Historical records present three different accounts of how he was martyred:

1. The Tragedy at the Camp

Another account states that Imam Hussain (رضی اللہ عنہ) was at the entrance of his camp, offering final words of guidance to his family before heading to the battlefield. He held Ali Asghar (رضی اللہ عنہ) in his arms, comforting his loved ones. Suddenly, a stray arrow from the enemy forces struck the infant, taking his life before his father’s eyes.

2. The Martyrdom at Birth

A third perspective suggests that Ali Asghar (رضی اللہ عنہ) was born in Karbala itself. According to this narration, while Imam Hussain (رضی اللہ عنہ) was sitting in his tent, a member of his family brought the newborn Ali Asghar (رضی اللہ عنہ) to him. As Imam Hussain (رضی اللہ عنہ) gave the Adhan (call to prayer) in the infant’s ear, an enemy soldier fired an arrow, instantly killing the newborn in his father’s embrace.

3. The Plea for Water

According to one well-known narration, Imam Hussain (رضی اللہ عنہ) carried Ali Asghar (رضی اللہ عنہ) towards the enemy camp, pleading for just a few drops of water for the innocent child. He addressed the forces of Yazid:

"If you do not have mercy on me, at least have mercy on this innocent child."

Instead of showing compassion, Harmala ibn Kahil, an archer in Yazid’s army, was ordered to shoot an arrow. The arrow pierced Ali Asghar’s (رضی اللہ عنہ) throat, and he was martyred in his father’s arms.

Regardless of which narration is accurate, the martyrdom of Hazrat Ali Asghar (رضی اللہ عنہ) stands as a symbol of ultimate oppression and cruelty in the tragedy of Karbala. His sacrifice remains deeply mourned and honored in Islamic history, highlighting the brutality faced by Imam Hussain (رضی اللہ عنہ) and his family.
